Iannone: “I dedicate this podium to my Ducati and the team
After his disastrous double DNF start to the season, Andrea Iannone recovers to take his first podium and points of 2016.
For the first time since the Australian Grand Prix in 2015, Andrea Iannone finished a MotoGP™ World Championship race. Having qualified in fourth, he started seventh due to his post-race penalty from Argentina, Iannone made a decent start off the line. He was fortunate to remain upright after contact with several other riders in the opening corners. The raw grunt of the Ducati Desmosedici GP saw Iannone make up several positions down the straight and by lap six he was inside the top five. He would benefit from the incident between Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda Team) and Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team) ahead on lap seven, the pair crashing and promoting Iannone to third. With the pressure to score points heavy on his mind, ‘The Maniac’ remained calm for the remainder of the race to end third.
With his first podium of the year came Iannone’s first points, the Ducati Team rider now sitting 11th in the standings. It’s not the start to the year he nor Ducati had wanted, but they’re now back on track and will hope to continue scoring points in Jerez and beyond. This is Iannone’s best finish at the Circuit of the Americas and his first podium at the track. It is also only Iannone’s fourth premier class podium since moving up in 2013.
Andrea Iannone: “It was really important for me to get on the podium today, but more than anything else we had to close the race with a good result. I regretted having to lose a row on the grid and at the start I had a contact with Dani and Aleix so I lost some positions. But in the race I was consistent and I always ran with a good pace, very close to that of Jorge, and if I had started well maybe I could even fight for second position. Anyway I'm glad how this Grand Prix went and I dedicate this podium to my Ducati and the team because I made them suffer in the first two races and I hope that this result will repay them for their commitment and the work they are doing to myself."
